Bamboo chashaku matcha scoop
Thanks to its distinctive, gently curved shape, the chashaku allows you to comfortably scoop up the right amount of powder and transfer it directly into the bowl, that is to say Matchawanu. This small utensil plays an important role, not only in practical terms but also in terms of ritual – it helps you prepare matcha in a more mindful, aesthetically pleasing way that is in keeping with Japanese tradition.
Unlike traditional loose-leaf teas, matcha is consumed in its entirety, which is why measuring out the correct portion is crucial for the flavour, strength and consistency of the drink. A chashaku makes it easier to maintain the correct proportions and makes the whole preparation process feel more authentic.
Traditionally, to prepare Thin tea – that is, a lighter, more delicate matcha – about 1–2 chashaku portions and 75–100 ml of water. This ratio produces a subtle flavour and a characteristic, light foam on the surface.
In the case of koicha, meaning a thick and more intense form of matcha, a significantly larger amount of powder is used. The infusion is prepared with several portions of matcha with less water, giving it a more velvety, thick consistency and a deeper flavour. Koicha is traditionally served mainly during formal tea ceremonies.
